Sanat: Between Silence and Words
A Culture That Speaks Through Silence
Today, words fill every space. I traveled to Finland through the Erasmus program, where silence and personal space are valued as much as speech.
This idea struck me the day before I left, after reading a social media article. It described Finnish society as shy and resistant to small talk. People there don’t feel the need to fill every silence.
The notion that silence could be as powerful as words intrigued me. What do words mean in a country where silence is so deeply respected?
When I arrived, I asked the first Finns I met about the article. I wanted to know if it was true. To my surprise, everyone agreed.
The next morning, I walked through a frozen forest. Surrounded by still snow and complete calm, I encountered something unexpected—a heavy, enveloping silence.
That moment sparked my new project. I began asking everyone I met a few simple things: their name, their favorite Finnish word, and what it meant to them. Then, I took their portrait.
The Power of Shared Words in a Quiet Culture
This process was eye-opening. Each person was willing to share something deeply personal—something rarely expressed in their culture.
They wrote their words with calm and generosity. That act reflected their quiet relationship with language and silence.
The words were as diverse as the people. Some were profound. Others were simple. But all carried unique meaning.
Sanat: Capturing the Balance of Silence and Expression
The result became my latest photography project, Sanat. Through portraits and chosen words, I aimed to capture the harmony between silence and speech.
In Finland, both coexist in quiet balance—present in nature and in the people themselves.
